Suspended Josh Shaw bet against his own team, the Cardinals, and lost

Josh Shaw’s suspension by the NFL included a bet against his own team, the Arizona Cardinals.

Shaw, the injured defensive back who was banned by the league on Friday through at least through the 2020 season for betting on multiple NFL games, wagered against the Cardinals as part of a three-team parlay at Caesars sportsbook in Las Vegas on Nov. 10, ESPN reported.

Shaw reportedly placed bets on the second-half outcomes of three games, including on the Tampa Bay-Arizona game. The Buccaneers were leading the Cards, 17-13, at halftime, and won the game 30-27, failing to cover the spread as one-point favorites after intermission, prompting Shaw to lose his parlay.

“If you work in the NFL in any capacity, you may not bet on NFL football,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in Friday’s release announcing the suspension.

Shaw, who hasn’t appeared in any games this season due to a shoulder injury, was the first player suspended by a major sports league for gambling since a 2018 Supreme Court ruling allowing legalized sports betting, paving the way for sports books to open in several states outside of Nevada.

In January, the NFL entered into a partnership making Caesars Entertainment the league’s first official casino partner.

According to ESPN, Caesars contacted the Nevada State Gaming Control Board on Nov. 10, and later alerted the NFL, after learning that Shaw had placed the wager. The report also stated that Shaw listed “professional football player” as his occupation for a betting account with the casino’s sportsbook.
